If computers can read our thoughts, then it is both fascinating and scary at the same time. Should we consider it a good thing or an invasion of privacy? But first, how is this possible? We know that it has been possible to detect brain wave patterns for a long time now. The problem was that we could not interpret those signals. The aim of many people is to interpret these signals and make them into images or ensure that the computer can identify those signals and understand what is in the image and give a detailed explanation.
The readouts from people’s brains can be taken, and scientists can match them into words or pictures. When computers can do this with accuracy, then this technology can be called successful. Right now, this tech is still new, and the accuracy is not perfect as there is still work that needs to be done.
So is this a technological marvel, or is it simply creepy?
Computer vision is when we train our computers how to understand the
world. We use images and videos to see if the machines can learn and classify objects when they see them. One common example of this software is google lens. This software can look at pictures and show related photos on the internet. This is also used in driverless cars that have autopilot features in the medical field. In looking at crops and animals. Some places and universities are already making giant steps towards computers that can read minds. Here are a few of them.
San Francisco scientists from the University of California have one such mind-reading device that turns the mental activity into texts with about ninety percent accuracy. It can detect what that person hears through the brain waves, and by using that, it can understand what is being heard.
They do this by attaching electrodes to the head in positions that are near the auditory cortex. Then they are able to catch the brain signals and use these signals to interpret what the person is saying to themselves or hearing.
Carnegie Mellon University has found ways to see complex thoughts as well. They can do this by taking brain scans and then decoding what is going on in the brain. The AI that they use can even predict the next sentence and decide what will be said.
Facebook has its own software as well, and in this, they are trying to develop this software so that people can use their messenger app by simply thinking and not typing or using voice mail.
Microsoft has even acquired some patents for this software so that they can use brain activity to help customers. Microsoft is developing some user interfaces to achieve this goal. One example could be if there is harsh music playing. The computer can understand that you are getting irritated because of the brain waves, and it will automatically reduce the volume of the music.
The University of Toronto could recreate faces by using this tech. The subjects were shown about 140 faces, and by using AI, they were able to get those faces back from the brain waves. The faces were not very clear, but it is a start, and it is hopeful that this technology will get better over time. Many of the researchers say that they will be able to see faces just through memory.
In Japan, in the University of Kyoto, tech is quite similar to that in the University of Toronto, and there they are able to replicate what they have seen, and they do this by checking the blood flow that goes to the brain.
At the University of Purdue, the AI can understand what is happening in the visual ai cortex, and it can get to know what a person is seeing. So they have test subjects who were made to view videos, and they worked on their AI so that it could understand what was going on in the person’s brain and what they were seeing.
Neurable is a new company that has a game called the awakening, and this game is like virtual reality as in you can throw objects by simply thinking about it. There is an electrode headband that is responsible for getting the information from your brain to the game. This game does not read your thoughts. It just looks at your neural activity, and it understands what you want it to do. This can be safer as people might not want people getting into their minds through game software, so this is a much safer option.
Some ways that computers reading our thoughts could affect us.
Designing- If this technology becomes widespread, then art would change and design as well. You can think about how you want your house to look and give that to an interior designer, and they can work with you to give you the home that you wish to get. Even if you are designing a car or a motorcycle, you can think of it, and it would be made into an image. Until now, they needed to be good at drawing out their ideas, but now all a designer needs is imagination, and they can design their vehicles the way they like. You can also design buildings, bridges and make various diagrams of how you want people to design.
Photography– Photographers will not need to buy cameras at all. They can simply look at a scene and then print the image of what they saw. If you go to a very risky area to click a photo, you do not need to carry a huge camera. You can simply look at the places around you and get them on paper. Directors can imagine movie scenes and show them to the cast and ask them to replicate what has been shown. In this way, the entertainment industry will change as well.
– Law – In a court of law, people will be able to share their experiences through actual images, and we can find out a lot about what people went through or even if they are lying. The entire law system might change with this technology. There will be many laws based on if this can and cannot be used in court or not. But eventually, it should make its way to determine the law in our courtrooms. It can help the justice system punish criminals more easily, but there will also be other laws that have to be made regarding privacy, and people misusing this teach to get inside people’s minds.
Military and police– Military and police interrogation would be different too. With this tech, police can come to know if someone is telling the truth or simply lying. Now you can just use this tech to look at the mental images of people who are your enemies. A spy might also go into enemy territory, and he might look at all the important information, and the images can be taken from his brain. A spy might simply look at some important documents, and those documents can be used to gather information.
Teachers- This technology might be used in schools as well, and teachers might show pictures and diagrams the way that they want students to learn. There might not be a need to look for material. You can simply think about it, and it will be present in front of you. This can help teachers teach better as they can give a detailed explanation about what they think and show it in a way that students can understand it.
If this technology starts to be implemented, then there would have to be more laws and rules regarding the privacy of people because all the information from your brain should not be taken from you with force or without you knowing. If you end up thinking about something awkward or personal, you do not want that picture to be printed. It might take some time for this technology to become available to the general public. It might not be available to the public; also, it might just be for governments. Right now, no one knows who will get it.
The whole world is slowly moving towards AI. We see it in our mobiles, laptops, and even cars now. AI is made to help us live our life better and to make things easier for us. It is important to know that AI is not a replacement for actual human thinking. We will always need humans to think and grow AI. Computers reading our thoughts will be very related to applications of artificial intelligence. It is important that we get to know about these things because later on, they will be used much more.
Artificial intelligence will be used in so many different ways, and we will be able to see images from our brains because computers will be able to read our thoughts. This can make our life easier, but at the same time, it will create many more problems that we would need to solve. It is important to remember that the images that will be generated will not be of 100 percent accuracy. Initially, it might be less accurate, and slowly they will improve the computers, and this can get better. The machine will look at what is in your brain, identify everything, and put it on paper.
