Tech advancements are taking place in the blink of an eye. True, it has been quite a while since something as revolutionary as an iPhone or an iPad has developed, however, that in no way means development has frozen.
AI has arrived and how! Nearly every industry has found some way of adapting it to provide users a better experience whether it be in gaming or real estate.
What is the difference between AI and AR/VR?
For starters, they both are different technologies built for different purposes. AR adds a digital layer in the physical world, making it part of one immersive experience. This can only be done by getting information over different sensory points such as the camera, GPS, gyroscopes, etc.
AI has several components to it. Machine learning, one of the components of AI uses algorithms, statistical models to learn and improve on the data fed to it. This is the secret behind software such as auto-correct, Google Search predictions, etc.
How does AI help with AR/VR?
Even though both are really unique and distinct technologies, AI and VR/AR come together to bring unique experiences. AI and AR/VR come together to bring immersive experiences. Deep neural networks can detect vertical/horizontal planes, depth as well. AI models are applied on top of AR to create effects. Snapchat filters are a good example.
Examples of AI and AR being applied together
Image Labelling: AI models are being used to identify different properties of an image such as location, people, activities, etc. After identifying the objects/ characters in the frame, then it is labeled in the image with the capability of AR functionalities.
Text recognition and translation: This is an amazing advancement. An AI model deciphers and interprets the text with its models. Then it is translated back to the user with the help of AR API’s. Google Translate has been using this effectively.
Object Identification: A frame is passed under an AI model. It identifies different objects in the frame and then AR applies an overlay to the frame and adds objects/information in the frame to make the user achieve his goal. Pokemon Go used this feature extensively.
At present, these features have only been used in mobile applications extensively. Going forward things are going to change dramatically. Here’s a look at how the future will look like:
The impact of AI and AR/VR together in the future
Disappearance of workspaces
With the world being accessible at a touch, there won’t be any reason for office spaces. Offices would most likely become virtual. We will be looking at an advanced Web with AR/ VR advancements. Every interaction will become virtual and people might be able to check-in, just wearing AR/VR glasses.
Already trainings have started using AR for providing training to their workforce. With the advancement of training tools, interactive experiences are being provided, which makes learning an enjoyable experience.
Immersive Presentations
With advancements in tech, there won’t be a need for creating powerpoints to showcase to the client. It will happen in real-time. AI and AR will interact to give a real-time visual that users will be able to capitalize on.
Storytelling will be extremely interactive, with characters and environments coming to life. Pokemon Go has provided us with a glimpse already. In the future, this will likely have the entire environment and not just visual.
Education
Education will no longer be either an audio/visual presentation. Rather, it will have an audio-visual interactive environment. This will be immensely helpful for students as students won’t have to imagine what is happening in the classroom, making students more active in classrooms.
With hands-on experience, we can expect better visualizations, students will be able to relate to information better. Students will be able to live the actual happenings. This should also help them in better recollection and strengthen their memory.
Screentime becomes reality
No longer will you require a tab, a smartphone, and a laptop to operate. Applications will be seamlessly integrated into our wearables making devices such as smartphones obsolete. No longer will there be any screentime. The entire screentime will be physically present as a part of our lives and not on different devices.
Autonomous Vehicles
Self-driving cars have already started. With services like Waymo, self-driving cars will soon be accessed by the mass. With advantages like increased safety, less fuel consumption increased productivity and convenience, surely self-driving cars are going to be a huge advancement.
E-Commerce
This is one industry that is going to benefit immensely. With the use of AI, marketers are already trying to gain new insight into buyer journeys. With advances like geo-targeting and real-time engagement, marketers will gain new insights as to how audiences are reacting to their creatives and even provide customized creatives, according to the buyer.
With the services of AR/VR, buyers’ journeys will become extremely innovative. Buyers will have the first-hand experience of trying on different attires without trying them physically. With AI, offers can even be geo-targeted to lure the buyer.
Wearables
We are looking at a future that literally involves the exchange of information at a touch. With a collaboration between AI and AR/VR, we will have clothing, accessories that can exchange information. Wearables have been involved in monitoring people for quite some time now.
Final Comments
AI and AR/VR are already influencing our world with intelligent apps. It is present in the Snapchat Filter, in the geo-targeting of Facebook and even in Alexa. The future is filled with endless possibilities and it is going to be revolutionary.
